Gemstones change the entire character of a piece of jewelry. A deep green emerald reads differently from a vivid ruby, and an opal shifts dramatically as it catches the light. Color, though, is only part of the story.
Gemstones fall into five groups: precious, semi-precious, organic, lab-created, and composite. Some are mineral-based. Others, like pearls and amber, come from living things. And lab-grown stones differ from natural ones in origin and price while sharing the same chemistry.
Those differences decide durability, how you care for a piece, and what it costs. For anyone choosing a gemstone ring, necklace, bracelet, or pair of earrings, knowing what sits behind the stone makes the decision much easier.
What Are the 5 Main Categories of Gemstones?
The five categories are precious, semi-precious, organic, lab-created, and composite. They sort stones by where they came from and how they formed, not by quality.
Precious gemstones. Diamond, ruby, sapphire, and emerald. Four stones carrying an outsized reputation built over centuries.
Semi-precious gemstones. Every other mineral-based gem. More abundant, often just as beautiful, and considerably kinder to your budget.
Organic gemstones. Pearl, amber, coral, and jet. Grown or secreted by living things rather than pulled from rock.
Lab-created gemstones. Grown in a controlled environment with the same chemistry as the natural version, without the mining bill.
Composite gemstones. Two or more materials bonded into one stone, usually to make a thin or fragile layer of something valuable usable in jewelry.
The precious and semi-precious split is a commercial and historical convention, not a gemological one. Working gemologists classify stones by mineral species and variety. None of these categories tells you whether a stone is good. They tell you where it came from and roughly what it should cost.
The Four Precious Gemstones
The four stones traditionally grouped as precious are diamond, ruby, sapphire, and emerald.
They share a long history in fine gemstone jewelry, but each has a very different appearance and set of practical qualities.
1. Diamond

Mineral: Carbon | Mohs hardness: 10 | Common colors: Colorless, yellow, brown, pink, blue, and other fancy colors | Origins: South Africa, Russia, Canada, Botswana, and Australia
Diamond sits at 10 on the Mohs scale, the hardest natural material known. Only another diamond can scratch it.
That hardness is why diamond dominates engagement rings and eternity bands. These are pieces worn every day for decades, and diamond holds its polish through that in a way softer stones cannot.
The 4Cs of cut, color, clarity, and carat get marketed hard, and clarity in particular is oversold. Most inclusions are invisible without magnification. Colorless stones remain the standard, but fancy colored diamonds in yellow, pink, and the rare blue have their own separate and genuinely wild market.
On price, a colored gemstone is often less expensive than a diamond of similar size, though that depends heavily on the stone, its quality, and its origin. Fine ruby, in particular, can command more per carat than diamond.
2. Ruby

Ruby is corundum colored red by chromium, and the finest examples show what the trade calls pigeon's blood red, a color so specific it earned its own name.
Myanmar's Mogok valley produced the legendary historical stones, but the market has shifted. Mozambique's Montepuez deposit, discovered in 2009, is now the most productive source of gem-quality ruby in the world, and most fine ruby entering the trade today comes from there.
In Sanskrit, ruby is ratnaraj, meaning king of gems, which the GIA notes is a fair description for a stone valued for thousands of years. At 9 on the Mohs scale, it handles daily wear well, which is why a ruby tennis bracelet works as an everyday piece rather than an occasion-only one. 3. Sapphire

Same mineral as ruby, different trace elements, completely different personality. Sapphire appears in nearly every color except red, since red corundum is by definition ruby. GIA groups the non-blue colors as fancy sapphires, covering violet, green, yellow, orange, pink, and purple.
Blue is what most people picture, and the velvety Kashmir stones set the benchmark collectors still measure against at auction.
One correction worth making: sapphire is often described as almost as hard as diamond because 9 sits next to 10. The Mohs scale is ordinal, not proportional, and diamond is several times harder than corundum in absolute terms. Sapphire is genuinely tough and excellent for daily wear. It just is not nearly diamond. Its durability, more than the royal association from Princess Diana's ring, is why it works so well in gemstone engagement rings.
4. Emerald

Emerald is the bluish green to green variety of beryl, the same mineral species that includes aquamarine. Its color comes from chromium and vanadium.
Where the line falls between emerald and ordinary green beryl is genuinely contested. GIA notes that gemologists and dealers disagree on how much green a stone needs, and that a stone too light in color is generally called green beryl and priced far lower.
Colombia produces the stones the market treats as the standard, with Brazil, Zambia, and Ethiopia supplying the rest. At 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale, emerald is softer than the other three precious stones, and most emeralds carry surface-reaching inclusions, so it suits occasion rings, pendants, and earrings better than knockabout daily wear. The reason an emerald and diamond tennis bracelet works so well is that the diamonds carry the sparkle while the emeralds carry the color, and neither has to do both jobs.

Semi-precious covers every mineral gem outside the four precious stones, which runs to hundreds of species. These seven are the ones you will actually encounter most often in fine jewelry.
1. Amethyst: The Tranquil Violet Gemstone
Origins: Brazil, Uruguay, and Zambia | Mohs hardness: 7
Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz, ranging from pale lavender to deep violet, with the richest, most saturated hues carrying the highest value.
Until the nineteenth century, amethyst was genuinely scarce and priced alongside the precious stones. Large Brazilian deposits changed that permanently, which is why a stone once reserved for royalty and clergy now sits comfortably in everyday gemstone rings and necklaces. It is traditionally associated with calm and clarity of mind.
2. Topaz: The Gem of Clarity and Fire
Origins: Brazil, Nigeria, and Sri Lanka | Mohs hardness: 8
Topaz runs from colorless through yellow, orange, pink, and blue, and at 8 on the Mohs scale, it handles everyday wear in rings, earrings, and pendants comfortably.
Blue topaz deserves a note. Natural blue topaz is rare. Almost all blue topaz sold today starts as colorless material that is irradiated and then heated, which is a stable, permanent, industry-standard treatment rather than a coating. That process is why blue topaz is both widely available and affordable. Topaz is traditionally linked to strength and protection.
3. Aquamarine: The Sea-Colored Gemstone
Origins: Brazil, Nigeria, Madagascar, Pakistan, and Zambia | Mohs hardness: 7.5 to 8
Aquamarine is beryl, the same species as emerald, in pale blue to greenish-blue. Unlike emerald, it is typically clean and free of visible inclusions, which makes it considerably more durable in practice despite near-identical hardness.
It forms in large crystals, so sizable clean stones are available at reasonable prices, and the most valuable show the clearest, most vivid blue. Sailors once believed it calmed rough water, earning it the sailor's stone name. It works beautifully in gemstone fashion necklaces, where the color reads well against skin at chest height.
4. Garnet: The Gemstone of Friendship and Loyalty
Origins: Mozambique, Tanzania, Namibia, India, Sri Lanka, and the United States | Mohs hardness: 6.5 to 7.5
Garnet is not one mineral but a group of related silicates, which is why the hardness is a range rather than a number. Most people picture the deep red almandine and pyrope varieties, but garnet also occurs in green, orange, yellow, and purple.
It has been set in jewelry for thousands of years, with ancient Egyptian pieces among the earliest surviving examples. Garnets handle regular wear well and suit gemstone fashion rings and bracelets.
5. Opal: The Mystical Gemstone
Origins: Australia, Ethiopia, and Mexico | Mohs hardness: 5.5 to 6.5
Opal has no crystal structure. It is hydrated silica, which makes it a mineraloid rather than a true mineral, and that structure produces its play-of-color, the flashes that shift as the stone moves under light.
Black opals show the most vivid color play and command the highest prices. Australia remains the primary source. Opal needs real care. It is soft and can crack from sudden temperature changes, and it should never go in an ultrasonic cleaner. Reserve it for earrings and pendants rather than rings you wear daily.
6. Peridot: The Gemstone of Light and Renewal
Origins: Arizona, Myanmar, Pakistan, China, and historically Egypt's Zabargad island | Mohs hardness: 6.5 to 7
Peridot comes in exactly one color. Green, from yellow-green through olive, with no colorless or other-colored variety, because the color comes from iron in the stone's own chemistry rather than from trace impurities.
It forms deep in the Earth's mantle and is one of very few gems also found in meteorites. At 6.5 to 7, it sits just below quartz in hardness, so it handles occasional wear well but benefits from protective settings in rings.
7. Citrine: The Gemstone of Warmth and Positivity
Origins: Brazil, Madagascar, and Zambia | Mohs hardness: 7
Citrine is the yellow to orange variety of quartz, running from pale lemon to deep amber. At 7 on the Mohs scale, it wears well day to day.
Natural citrine is genuinely uncommon. Most citrine on the market is heat-treated amethyst, which is a permanent and openly disclosed treatment that produces the warm orange tones the stone is known for. Its association with wealth and abundance is why it turns up so often in gift pieces.
Organic Gemstones

Organic gemstones come from biological sources rather than from rock. Four matter commercially.
1. Amber: Fossilized Tree Resin
Origins: The Baltic region, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, and Myanmar | Mohs hardness: 2 to 2.5
Amber is tree resin fossilized over millions of years. It runs from golden to orange, occasionally red or green, and it is prized for its warm translucence and for the ancient insects and plant matter trapped inside individual pieces.
At 2 to 2.5, it is one of the softest materials used in jewelry, roughly as soft as a fingernail. It scratches easily and dissolves in solvents, including perfume and hairspray. Set it in pendants and earrings, not rings.
2. Pearl: The Ocean's Lustrous Gem
Origins: Japan, China, Australia, French Polynesia, and the Persian Gulf | Mohs hardness: 2.5 to 4.5
Pearls are the only gems formed inside a living animal, grown in layers of nacre that a mollusk deposits around an irritant. That nacre is what produces the depth of luster no other gem material replicates.
Natural pearls are rare and expensive. Almost everything on the market today is cultured, where the irritant is introduced deliberately, and the resulting pearl is otherwise formed the same way. Pearls are soft and porous, so they should go on last after perfume and cosmetics, and come off first. Never clean them in an ultrasonic.
3. Coral: A Gem of the Sea
Origins: The Mediterranean Sea, the Pacific, and Japan | Mohs hardness: 3.5 to 4
Precious coral is the calcified skeleton of colonial marine polyps, typically red, pink, or orange, with black and white varieties also used.
Harvesting pressure has reduced wild populations of several precious coral species, and trade in some is now regulated. If you are buying coral, ask the seller for sourcing documentation rather than assuming. At 3.5 to 4, it scratches easily and should be kept away from acids and household cleaners.
4. Jet: A Fossilized Wood Gem
Origins: Whitby in England, Spain, and the United States | Mohs hardness: 2.5 to 4
Jet is a form of lignite, wood compressed and fossilized over millions of years into a dense black material that takes a high polish. It is notably lightweight, which is why large pieces remain comfortable to wear.
Jet is inseparable from Victorian mourning jewelry, popularized after Prince Albert's death, and Whitby remains the name associated with the finest material. It is soft and brittle, so it needs careful handling.
A note on ivory. Ivory appears in older lists of organic gemstones. We do not include it. International trade is banned or heavily restricted in most markets, and demand drives elephant poaching. Vintage carved bone, mother-of-pearl, and modern plant-based alternatives give you the same creamy tone without the ethical and legal problems.
Lab-Created and Synthetic Gemstones

Lab-created gemstones are real gemstones. A lab-created ruby is corundum with the same crystal structure, hardness, and optical behavior as one pulled from the ground. The difference is where it grew, not what it is.
There is one distinction the industry cares about a great deal, and most shoppers never hear, and it is worth understanding before you buy.
A synthetic has the same chemistry as its natural counterpart. Lab-created diamond, ruby, sapphire, and emerald all qualify. Under FTC Jewelry Guides, a lab-created stone must have essentially the same optical, physical, and chemical properties as the natural version, and sellers must disclose it clearly using terms like laboratory-created or laboratory-grown.
A simulant is a different material that resembles the stone it imitates. Cubic zirconia and moissanite are simulants, not synthetic diamonds. Moissanite is silicon carbide, its own mineral, and it has a higher refractive index and roughly twice the dispersion of diamond, which is why it throws noticeably more colored fire. That is a real difference in appearance, not a lesser version of diamond, and plenty of buyers prefer it once they compare the two side by side.
Both are legitimate purchases. The problem is only ever a seller who blurs the line. If a stone is described simply as a diamond with no qualifier, it should be a mined or lab-grown diamond, not a simulant.
Natural stones carry a mystique tied to geological age and rarity, and that is a perfectly reasonable thing to pay a premium for. But lab-created and natural gemstones sitting side by side in a case are not a quality hierarchy. They are a choice about what you value.
Composite Gemstones
Composite gemstones are made by bonding two or three layers of material into a single stone.
A doublet uses two layers, a triplet three. The most common example is the opal doublet, where a thin slice of genuine precious opal is backed with dark material to deepen the color play and give the fragile layer enough structural support to survive being set.
Composites are not inherently deceptive, and they make some material commercially viable that would otherwise be unusable. They must be disclosed as they cost substantially less than solid stones, and they need more careful cleaning, since prolonged water exposure can weaken the bonding layer. Never put a composite through an ultrasonic cleaner.
How to Choose the Right Gemstone Jewelry
Match the stone's hardness to how you'll actually wear the gemstone jewelry. That single rule prevents most gemstone disappointments.
Rings take the most abuse of anything you own: Hardness should drive the decision more than color preference. Diamond, sapphire, ruby, and topaz all handle daily wear. Opal, pearl, and amber do not belong in a ring you never take off. Gemstone eternity bands are the most demanding of all, with constant contact against other rings and no rest.
Necklaces and pendants put the stone front and center: with very little impact risk, which is where emerald and aquamarine earn their keep. That color reads beautifully against skin at chest height, and softer stones are safe here.
Bracelets and bangles need serious durability: given how much they knock against desks and doorframes. It is exactly why the tennis setting works so well: it spreads impact along a line of small stones rather than concentrating it on one large one.
Earrings take almost no impact: which is your license to go softer and more adventurous. Opal, pearl, and amber all work here.
One more practical point is that softer and porous stones, meaning opal, pearl, amber, coral, and jet, should never go near an ultrasonic or steam cleaner. Warm water, mild soap, and a soft cloth is the whole routine. For anything set with multiple stones, have the settings checked periodically through warranty and repairs.

There is no universal best gemstone. There is only the one that fits the life the piece has to survive and the person wearing it.
A lab-created sapphire may be the smarter call for a first ring on a real budget. A natural Colombian emerald pendant may be worth the premium for an anniversary that deserves it. Both are good decisions when you understand what you are choosing between.
